An ode to artists
Making art is simply human
12/8/2025

This one is an ode to artists and makers, inspired by someone's (@birgithaberkamp) beautiful response on Instagram.
To everyone doubting whether what they're creating really matters in a world that is literally and metaphorically burning, this person had wise words in response to that:
"Art has never existed to fix the world. Art exists to keep the world human."
Making art can feel superfluous in this world when it can feel like there are much bigger issues to address. Political issues, climate issues, ethical issues and so on and so forth. It can make you feel as if whatever you're making is not important or is not the right thing to focus on right now. I'm sure most artists and makers feel this way from time to time.
But remember, your art does not exist to fix the world. In a world that is becoming rife with "AI art", your art serves as a reminder of humanity and its creative capabilities. People have been drawn to create since the beginning of time, with wall art, with molding clay and mud. It's the most natural thing since childhood. It does not have to bear a certain grand meaning. Each person is free to interpret in their own way, through their experiences, emotions and wisdom.
When I decided to quit my 9 to 5 beginning of this year, I was wracked with anxiety because I would be giving up on a monthly income. But let me tell you that now I don't actually miss working in an office. What irked me the most was during the slower days when most tasks were already done for the day, but we had to remain in the office merely because we were obligated to, because we sold our time for that monthly salary. I would think that my time was better spent making art, but never have I thought that my time was better spent in an office, while I was making art.
I do know that I'm really privileged to have the time to make art at the moment, and I'm really grateful for that. I hope you have that space for art too in your lives. No one makes art just for the accolades, make art because you can, and because it's human to do so.
